Probability theory is one of those subjects that everybody hated at school - me included!
Why does it have to be so boring?!??
Flipping coins, throwing dice and working out the probabilities of each outcome.
BORING!
Actually, basic probability theory isn't what you think it is.
The dice and coins are just smoke and mirrors obscuring the real magic of probability theory.
When you see it for what it really is, it's actually pretty cool, and I'm going to prove it to you - after I've tested your knowledge with a short, fun probability theory quiz.

Introduction to Probability Theory
For a while now I've been researching all the little nooks and crannies of the statistics world to create a big picture of what it looks like when you pull it all together.
And this is what the part about Probability Theory looks like:

So, how did you do in our probability theory quiz?
Well, this interactive quiz is actually one of the lessons in The Hive from our exclusive video course Statistics - The Big Picture, which is Open Access to start with (you don't need to register).

The 5 Most Awesome Things You Need to Know About Probability Theory
I'm not going to go into great depth right now, because that's what the video course is for, but here are the 5 most awesome things you probably didn't know about Probability Theory that can make a HUGE difference when planning and preparing your study:

A Summary of Basic Probability Theory
When it all comes down to it, basic probability theory is waayyyy more awesome than we all thought it was when we first learnt about it at school.
Basic probability theory is more than a thought experiment - it's a space where we plan and do our experiments. It's the place where we compare what we expect to happen with what actually happened in our experiment.
Best of all, we know that if we run our experiments correctly the results will apply to wider society.
These are what they didn't teach us at school, but they are what make Probability Theory one of the coolest kids on the block.
And you thought it was just about flipping coins and throwing dice, didn't you...
